City port safe from illegal
entry of imported products
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Chief collector Medolita Cabanag of the Bureau of Customs in Dumaguete City said Friday the city port is safe from the entry of illegal products from other countries.

Cabanag said they are very strict in securing and inspecting container vans that might contain illegally imported merchandise. Earlier, the BOC office in Manila had confiscated illegal imported products from China that included sugar, rice and electronic gadgets.

Reports said there is a possibility that these products will be distributed to the provinces in the country. Cabanag, however, assured that the chance of importing illegal products in Dumaguete port is very slim considering the port is small, compare to those of Manila and Cebu.

A jailguard assigned at the Dumaguete City Bureau of Jail Management and Protection was commended for his heroic act in apprehending a murder suspect last year.

The award was given by BJMP director Armando Llamazares.

Dumaguete City BJMP chief, Insp. Waldemar Villanueva said Pepico was off-duty when the incident happened, but did not have second thoughts about responding to the call for public service, Villanueva said.

PCA distributes
coconut seedlings
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Philippine Coconut Authority in Oriental Negros has achieved 66 percent of its target for the distribution of seedlings under its coconut planting and replanting program.

PCA provincial manager Brendan Trasmonte said the turnover of seedlings was attended by farmers who said the rainy season is the perfect time to plant coconut.

The province has allocated P5 million for the purchase of coco seed nuts from Zamboanga Research Center. Trasmonte said they have conducted training for the 34 Barangay Agricultural Development Centers in the province about the proper care of the coconuts. He added that his office is planning to transfer the coconut nursery to the BADC sites because the present one will be used for the Sidlakang Negros.
