PCA distributes
coconut seedlings
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Philippine Coconut Authority in Oriental Negros has achieved 66 percent of its target for the distribution of seedlings under its coconut planting and replanting program.

PCA provincial manager Brendan Trasmonte said the turnover of seedlings was attended by farmers who said the rainy season is the perfect time to plant coconut.

The province has allocated P5 million for the purchase of coco seed nuts from Zamboanga Research Center. Trasmonte said they have conducted training for the 34 Barangay Agricultural Development Centers in the province about the proper care of the coconuts. He added that his office is planning to transfer the coconut nursery to the BADC sites because the present one will be used for the Sidlakang Negros.

The province has more than 85,000 hectares of coconut land area. The program aims to support the bio-fuels law of the national government.*MA
