RP five pips Korea
for second win

BY CEDELF TUPAS

Stung by two last-second losses, the Philippines made sure there was no endgame meltdown last night when it defeated Korea, 88-84, for its second victory in the 29th William Jones Cup in Taipei.

Asi Taulava, JJ Helterbrand and Gabe Norwood came through with crucial plays down the stretch as the Nationals bounced back from two straight heart-breaking losses.

The 6-foot-9 Taulava, foul trouble early in the opening-half, was a pillar of strength inside the pain and hit three of four free throws in the final minute to keep the Nationals afloat as the Koreans sustained the pressure, 80-78.

Tirthdas' bets rule derby

The cockfighters of Kenneth Tirthdas scored four wins and a draw to emerge solo champion in the recent Talisay City Negros Cockers 5-cock Derby at the Talisay City Cockpit in Negros Occidental.

The K & J RGG gamebirds of Tirthdas proved too superior in all their matches to rule the two-day cockfighting event.

Five other entries collected four victories to share the insurance pot. They are Eric Lacson's August 5-Cock 5M Guaranteed; Dan Bernales' RM 940/Dante; Boy Abada's Margaux; Jess Rivera's St. Therese, and Keene Ortaliz' BCM Combined. Boy Nilo Lizares was the chairman of the organizing committee, while Oca Yusay and Thirthdas were auditor and vice president, respectively.
