RP trounces USA in Jones Cup

RP trounces
USA in Jones Cup

The Philippines rode behind Jimmy Alapag and Mark Caguioa in the final three minutes to scramble past defending champion USA, 72-67, last night in their opening match in the 29th William Jones Cup basketball tournament at the Sinjhuang Stadium in Taipei.

The 6-foot Caguioa, who plays for Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA, scored the final seven points as the Philippines blew hot and cold and hot again to rally for their first victory in the 10-team tournament.

Alapag drained a triple that was followed up by another trey from Caguioa to push the Filipinos, 65-59, with 2:04 remaining. The Ginebra guard then sealed the game with a backdoor lay-up and another twinner on the fastbreak with 25 seconds left. The Filipinos had their biggest lead at 39-31 at halftime as Alapag used his quickness to shred the defense with easy lay-ups in the second quarter but they groped for form in the third period and was limited to a point in the first seven minutes of the third quarter.

Revised volley schedule out

The revised schedule of games of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball Invitational League in Bacolod City was released by tournament organizers yesterday, following the withdrawal of St. Scholastica's Academy.

Tournament leader Doņa Hortensia Salas Benedicto High School will play two games on Saturday, including a crucial tiff with defending champion Doņa Montserrat Lopez National High School at 10:30 a.m at the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court.

Tied for second with Montserrat with a 2-1 record, La Salle won't be playing until Sunday when it faces winless St. Benilde School. Also scheduled on Saturday are matches between La Consolacion College and Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod; DMLMHS against CSA-B and DHSBNHS versus LCC.

There is little left unknown in Mark Cardona's offense and yet the opposition still wasn't able to stop him. As a result, Cardona proved every bit the explosive player that he is - again - and he is once more the unanimous choice as the PBA Press Corps' Player of the Week for the period June 25-July 1.

It was the second straight and seventh such citation - the most among all players - this season for the 6-foot-1 guard and TNT coach Derick Pumaren attributed it all to the player making a mockery of the Red Bull defense in their best-of-seven semifinals duel.
