IN DUMAGUETE
CENRO
personnel linked
to illegal logging activity
The Dumaguete City-based Community and Environment
and Natural Resources Office is investigating the possible involvement
of its personnel in illegal logging activities in Pamplona, Oriental
Negros.
Environment and Natural Resources Officer Charlie
Fabre said his office has created a three-man investigation team
to determine whether a CENRO employee had a hand in the cutting
and sowing of narra species in Sitio Anibongan, Bansu, Pamplona.
Operatives of the Pamplona police confiscated
on June 22 some 246 board feet of sawn narra lumber. The police
identified the owner as Julito Elvina. The lumber, Fabre said, bore
a Department of Environment and Natural Resources hatchet mark,
which indicates that the cutting and sowing of the lumber is permitted
by his office. Fabre, however, said his office did not issue a permit
for the cutting or sawing of the tree, eliciting suspicion that
a CENRO employee or employees connived with the owner of the lumber.
He said two of his personnel assigned in the
area will be subjected to investigation. He however, refused to
identify them, pending result of the probe, but he said, he will
not tolerate in wrongdoings of any of his employees. "I am not remiss
in reminding our personnel to avoid getting involved in any irregularity.
If they are proven to have committed such act, they have to face
the consequence and I will never tolerate them," Fabre said.
Meanwhile, Fabre said the alleged owner of the lumber
will also be investigated and will be charged if evidence warrants.*RA
