POF deferment draws criticisms

Sports leaders from Negros Occidental yesterday scored the decision of the Philippine Olympic Festival Organizing Committee to reschedule the staging of the 2nd POF Visayas Qualifying Games in Antique because of the May elections.

NOPSSCEA Sports Task Force chairman Roger Banzuela said the possibility that the multi-sport event will not be staged this year now looms large because of the postponement.

The best time to hold a multi-event sporting competition involving school-based athletes is during the summer, Banzuela said.

Four crowns are up for grabs in the 1st Doc Eric Cup Open Chess Tournament that takes centerstage Saturday at the Talisay City Gymnasium in Negros Occidental.

The three-day competitions, which are part of Talisay's 9th Charter Day celebration, will adopt a seven-round Swiss system with the cheesers battling for the titles in the open, women, 18-Under and 13-Under divisions.

Organizing committee member Jesse Sanchez yesterday said that the tournament will only be limited to 200 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. The top three woodpushers of each category will be given trophies and cash prizes, Sanchez said, adding that the competitors are requested to bring their own chess set and clock.
