Negros shuttlers cop 7 titles
in 'Dinagyang' tournament

Shuttlers from Negros Occidental stamped their class on the 3rd Mayor Jerry Treņas Dinagyang Tournament at the Sportsville Badminton Court in Iloilo City over the weekend by claiming seven titles.

Nikki Therese Servando spearheaded the Negrenses' charge, snaring four championships during the two-day competition that was participated in by about 300 bets from all over Western Visayas.

Servando, a Grade 6 student at Trinity Christian School, started her bid by beating Cadiz City-born Diane Bibiano in the 12-Under girls' singles finals, before grabbing the 16-Under girls' singles crown against Andrea Palanog of Antique.

The 12-year-old Servando also added a pair of doubles title after teaming up with Dessa Mae Ariņo of Cadiz in the 12-Under and 16-Under girls' doubles.

The Servando-Ariņo tandem posted a victory over Ilonggos Shayne Dumyol and Camille Gayo in the championship showdown of the 12-Under division, before emerging triumphant against Roxas City-based duo Juelyn Bacomo and Diane Dela Flor in the 16-Under finals.

Also coming up big for the Negros squad, mentored by Cadiznon Jordan Sun, was Ernesto Layao Jr., who prevailed over Huele Huglen of Antique for the championship in the 16-Under boys' singles.

Bacoleņos Raymund Andrade and Bong Ababao reigned supreme in the Class C men's doubles hostilities, while Joyce Maja and Riezl Embarallez of Bacolod City snatched the Class C ladies' doubles crown.

Cadiz standout Robert Longno reached the title duel in the 12-Under boys' singles category only to lose against JC Clarito of Iloilo and settle for first runner-up.*CIT
