PSC help sought
for chess academy
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The assistance of the Philippine Sports Commission is being sought for the proposed Philippine Chess Academy to push through, Bro. Roly Dizon said Thursday night.

Dizon, former president of the University of St. La Salle, said that he will also ask for the support of the Philippine Olympic Committee aside from the P10 million annual budget being asked from the PSC.

The founder of the National University Games, Dizon said that if the PSC and POC will not approve the request, propose to President Gloria Arroyo that she approves the plan through an Executive Order, he said.

The proposed main campus of the chess academy will be in Manila, while the Visayas region will have an extension school at the Bacolod Chess Training Center, he added. Tournaments will be conducted by the academy as part of its training, with the different Filipino chess masters serving as the teachers in two to three sessions per week after the regular classes of the students who are interested in the sport, he said.

The academy will choose scholars, who will be given full support by the government, including their tuitions fees and accommodation, among others, he added.

Meanwhile, the JRR Dizon Foundation Inc. is also planning to hold clinics in northern and southern Negros to hasten the development of chess, aside from its annual tournaments. Dizon said clinics will be handled by standouts from Negros led by Fide Master Hamed Nouri of Escalante City. *CIT
