Sugar prices drop slightly
but remain above P1,000

Millgate prices of "B" or raw sugar slightly decreased this week, but remained above P1,000 per 50-kilo Lkg, a monitor of the Sugar Master Plan Foundation shows.

At the bidding on Thursday, prices this week range from P1,088 per Lkg to P1,155 while in the previous week, from P1,112.82 to P1,218.90. For the current week, Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company sold its stocks at P1,094 (high) and P1,088 (low); Central Azucarera de La Carlota, P1,096.28 (high) and P1,096 (low); Hawaiian-Philippine Company, P1,108.01 (high) and P1,106; SONEDCO, P1,085;

Victorias Milling Company, P1,100; Lopez Sugar Corp., P1,100; Sagay Central Inc., P1,100; CADP, P1,155; BUSCO, P1,095; Passi I, P1,110; Passi II, P1,125.01; and Pilar, P1,095.01.

Since the start of January, sugar prices were above the P1,000 per Lkg level. In the first week, from P1,204.25 to P1,149.68 per Lkg. while in the second week, the lowest price P1,067.67 while the highest, at P1,208.89

NFA SUGAR

Meanwhile in 2006, the National Food Authority under its Sugar Procurement Program purchased 44,013.07 Lkgs of B2 sugar.

Total sugar procured was P41.81 million from nine sugar mills in Negros Occidental.

The NFA started its sugar procurement operations from March to August 2006 as provided in Executive Order 512, authorizing the NFA to intervene to provide consumers access to reasonable prices and supply of sugar for crop year 2005 to 2006.*NLG
