Damage suit mulled
vs. 2 shipping firms
FOR DESTROYING MARINE SANCTUARY
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE AND MARICAR ARANAS

The Dumaguete City government is bent on filing a damage suit against two shipping lines whose vessels damaged severely the coral reefs in the city's 6.5-hectare marine sanctuary area, in Barangay Banilad Monday.

Both MV Jake Vincente of Dos Villa Shipping Lines based in Siquijor and MV Anastacia of July Lightherage Corporation ran aground in the marine sanctuary, investigation showed.

MV Jake Vincente Dos was on its way to the Dumaguete Coconut Oil Mills port in San Miguel, Bacong from Subic Bay, Olongapo City, loaded with tons of animal feeds, when it miscalculated its destination.

No fake survivor
pensioners: GSIS
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Government Service Insurance System in Dumaguete City has not encountered any case of fake survivor pensioners because it has taken measures such as the E-card enrolment and the yearly survey on survivorship, to prevent this, Jaydon Villaverde of the GSIS Information Office said.

The E-card enrolment controls the disbursement of benefits by suspending pensions until pensioners get their E-cards, while the survivorship survey verifies and updates pensioner records, he said.

Recently, the national GSIS suspended temporarily monthly benefits of around 20,000 questionable claimants-pensioners due to the failure of remarried survivors to inform the GSIS of their new status, and the follow-up on the coming of age of minors receiving pensions. The GSIS is continually updating the databases to clean these records, he said.

3 agri-tourism events
slated in province
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Oriental Negros government will host three big events aimed at gaining world spotlight, boost organic agriculture, bamboo production, and promote culture-based tourism and attract investors next month, Gov. George Arnaiz said.

The first event is the 5th National Bamboo Conference to be held Feb. 7-9 at the Bamboo Multi-Purpose Hall, St. Paul's University, Dumaguete City.

Arnaiz said the province is supporting the conference to strengthen its local bamboo industry and entice investors. The province granted P150,000 to the Philippine Bamboo Foundation Inc., the event co-host. It will be joined by government leaders, bamboo entrepreneurs, researchers, scientists, students and faculty from various academic communities in the country and investors from all over the country.
