Loptta wins national title

The Lopue's Table Tennis Association posted a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Andro Team-A to bring home the crown in the 3rd Flexible Cup National Table Tennis Championships over the weekend at the Far Eastern University Gym in Manila.

Andro drew first blood as Lauro Crisostomo, the Philippines' former top paddler, scored a 3-0 demolition of Isaias Seronio, before Mark Jimenez leveled the match at 1-1 for LOPTTA. Down 0-2 and trailing 3-8 in the third game, Jimenez refused to wilt in the face of Andro standout Johan Remaneses, storming back to rack up three straight games for a 3-2 triumph.

Nouri inches closer to IM norm

After impressive performances in two international events, Negrense Hamed Nouri only needs 12 more games to be declared by the international chess federation as an International Master.

Nouri, who hails from Escalante City, was recently declared as a Fide Master after finishing eighth in the Vietnam Zonal Chess Championships with 5.5 match points. Jesse Sanchez of the Negros Chess Players Federation Inc. yesterday said that Nouri already achieved his IM norm but still needs to register respectable results in his next 12 games to confirm his status.

The 28-year-old Nouri posted two wins and seven draws in Vietnam after becoming the only Filipino finishing in the Top 10 of the 1st President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Cup International Open and Chess Challenge in November.

Val Motors, Summit debut in style

Banking on strong first-half performances, Val Motors and Summit Mineral Water debuted in style Tuesday night when they cruised to easy victories in the 7th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Summit opened the game with a 19-0 blast en route to a 92-80 win over Autoworld, after Val Motors overwhelmed AA Electrical, 84-66 in a match where a second quarter spurt enabled the veteran-laden squad to pull away to victory. Veteran Nene Sibaya nailed back-to-back triples to engineer a run that saw Val Motors taking a 44-27 cushion at halftime, before Hernie Tamayo took over the scoring chores in the third period to sustain Val's charge.

The balanced offensive was led by Cesar Ordas with 12 points. Gudoy Cepriano, Sibaya and Tamayo added 11 apiece. The win pushed Summit on top of Group B along wit opening-day winners BBC.
