A cockfarm caretaker was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment for stabbing dead a man who was asleep at a dance hall in Barangay Vista Alegria, Murcia.

Sentenced to reclusion perpetua by Judge Roberto Chiongson of the Regional Trial Court of Bacolod was Ronald Leonidas, 27, for the killing of Warren la Puebla, ABS-CBN reported.

Chiongson said there was treachery in committing the crime as de Puebla was asleep when he was stabbed several times. The judge also said flight was an admission of guilt as Leonidas was arrested two years later in Barangay Alangilan, Bacolod. Chiongson also ordered Leonidas to pay the heirs of de Puebla P50,000 for his death and P25,000 for burial expenses.

After his sentencing, Leonidas maintained that he was innocent of the crime and that he was leaving the matter in God's hands.*
