Sixty aspiring cagers will showcase their talents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow in the 1st Visayas Tryouts of the 2007 Nike Elite Basketball Camp at the St. John's Institute Activity Center in Bacolod City.

The participants will be vying for the 80 slots up for grabs nationwide of the camp from March 30 to April 4 at the Brent International School in Laguna.

Forty-four dribblers from Negros Occidental are eyeing a spot in the all-expenses-paid camp with University of St. La Salle having the most number of participating cagers at 11. Other Negros Occidental-based schools that have fielded their players are Mansilingan Christian Academy, Bacolod Tay Tung High School, SJI, Tangub Christian Academy, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and Silay Institute.

Sixteen aspiring cagers will come from Iloilo with the Iloilo Central Commercial High School, reigning Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet champion, having nine dribblers joining the tryout.

Other schools from Iloilo that have sent their stalwarts for the event are University of San Agustin-Iloilo, Ateneo de Iloilo University and St. Joseph's School-Iloilo.

Eric Altamirano, former Philippine Basketball Association coach, project director Alex Compton and San Beda College mentor Ato Badolato will conduct the tryout that is backed by IBA, Elite and Nike.

Coach Rommel Rasmo, who assists IBA facilitate the tryout together with basketball scout-businessman Dexter Day, said that Compton will plane in at 9:30 a.m. today together with the Elite Camp staff.

Altamirano is set to arrive at 5:30 p.m. today, while Badolato will plane in Sunday morning, he said, adding that the registration at SJI starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The mythical five after the camp, which has lined up skill-building workshops, scrimmages, truth talk sessions and an all-star game, will be sponsored by Nike to participate in the All Asia Camp in China, Compton earlier said.

Elite will shoulder the fare, accommodation, food, jerseys, shorts and shoes of the cagers who will be chosen in the six-day camp that will be participated by players 18 years old and below, he said. *CIT
