165 Negros athletes
vying in reg'l Prisaa

About 165 student-athletes will banner Negros in the Regional Private Schools and Athletics Association Games that will be co-hosted by Iloilo and Cadiz from Feb. 5-11.

NOPSSCEA Sports Task Force chairman Roger Banzuela said that the bulk of the delegation will come from the University of St. La Salle with 80 standouts, while the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos has 36 athletes vying for top honors.

West Negros College will field 29 bets, most coming from its football and basketball squads that brought home the NOPSSCEA crowns, while the Riverside College will have 10 athletes, Banzuela, who is also the Western Visayas PRISAA athletic manager, said. The other schools, which will shoulder the allowances of their respective athletes, that will represent Negros in the regional games are John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation, VMA Global College, La Consolacion College and Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod with four, three, two and one student-athletes, respectively, he said.

Banzuela, who also serves as the chairman of the Region VI PRISAA technical committee, said that the first batch of the contingent, composed of 48 athletes from athletics and football, will leave for Iloilo on Feb. 4.

The second batch of the delegation, which is comprised of 117 bets, will leave for Dumangas on the morning of Feb. 5 via Roll-on, Roll-off vessel before taking the bus to Capiz, he said. The athletics and football competitions are scheduled from Feb. 5-6 in Iloilo because the stadium in Capiz is still undergoing renovation for the weeklong hostilities.

The events that will be played in Cadiz from Feb. 8-11 are the men and women's badminton, swimming, lawn tennis, chess, taekwondo, table tennis and volleyball, and the men's basketball and sepak takraw.

Led by their tankers, the Negros standouts grabbed the overall title in the 2006 edition of the regional school-based meet against bets from Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz and Antique. The champions in the regional PRISAA, which is being staged in the collegiate level, will don the colors of Region VI in the National PRISAA Games in Iloilo City.

The Western Visayas standouts brought home their third consecutive crown in the national hostilities in Pangasinan last year.*CIT
