ASEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
RP holds Myanmar
to scoreless draw
BY CEDELF P. TUPAS

BANGKOK --- The Philippines capped its Asean Football Championships bid with a noteworthy performance last night when it held Myanmar to a scoreless draw at the Army Stadium here.

With goalkeeper Michael Casas in inspired form, the nationals held their ground against a Burmese side desperate for a win to keep their semifinal bid alive after Thailand beat Malaysia, 1-0.

But the RP booters had other plans in mind, shrugging off two straight 4-0 losses against the Thais and Malays.

The Filipino booters almost snatched the game in injury time but Ariel Zerudo and Mark Alvin Valeroso both missed clear-cut chances on the counter attack.

The night belonged to Casas, who thwarted six shots in the second half as Myanmar, 20 rungs higher than the Philippines in the rankings, searched for a winner.

"We could have taken the match. I'm proud of the team," RP coach Aris Caslib told the DAILY STAR.

Negrense striker-midfielder Arnie Pasinabo came into the game in the second half and ignited the RP attack. His true ball to Valeroso almost trended in by was foiled by defenders.

Jeffrey Liman also came close in the second half but his volley sailed just wide. Caslib said that the team lacked match experience. *CPT
