Mentally-ill patient
killed in road mishap
4 FACING RAPS FOR ROBBERY
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE AND RENE GENOVE

The body of a patient of the Talay Rehabilitation Center, now known as the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital Psychiatric Ward, believed killed in a road mishap was found Sunday evening, in Barangay Talay, Dumaguete City.

Gerry Torete, 23, single, of Escaget, Sibulan town, had earlier escaped from his isolation cell at the psychiatric ward by destroying the padlock while his father, Salvador, had left to buy medicines. His cousin, Belen Pastidio, reported Torete's escape from the psychiatric ward at 1 p.m., Sunday, and efforts to locate him proved futile.

The family was told late in the evening that Torete was bumped by an unidentified vehicle and died instantaneously.

Okoy River
rechanneling eyed

IN SIBULAN

The Sibulan government is expected to rechannel Okoy River because of the possibility that it will again overflow during heavy rains and may cause flooding.

Councilor Gil Genaro Concepcion said the town allocated P600,000 for the project and P2 million was given by the Oriental Negros government.

At least three houses were swept away by rampaging flood waters during the recent typhoons, while owners also complained of illegal quarrying. By rechanneling the river, Concepcion said small-time quarries should also be banned.

Manjuyod
blood-letting pilot area

Vice Governor Jose Baldado said he welcomes the resolution making Manjuyod town a pilot area for a blood donation program by the Philippine Nation Red Cross in Oriental Negros.

He said the problem of negative perception about blood donations should be addressed since this is why many are afraid of donating blood. Some have been made to believe that donating blood is bad for the health and can cause death.

Baldado said the program had been implemented in Manjuyod during his term as mayor and he wanted to revive it.
