BACIWA alert up
vs. hydrant theft

The Bacolod City Water District is requesting the public to be vigilant against the theft of fire hydrants in Bacolod City.

Officer-in-charge Juliana Carbon said the public should report to the BACIWA office any person or persons stealing or selling fire hydrants so they can be apprehended and legal actions taken against them.

While it was reported last year that about 476 water meters were stolen, Carbon said she has been informed that two fire hydrants were stolen this year. She said one was stolen on Dec. 23 near Andress Bonifacio Elementary School and the other at 17th- Aguinaldo streets, in Brgy. 4, on Jan. 5.

Carbon said there was an attempt to steal three more Monday at North Drive, 13th - Gatuslao streets and 18th-Gatuslao streets.

She said a garbage collector reported to them that he saw a person riding a trisikad attempt to steal a fire hydrant.

Carbon said the fire hydrants are installed in various strategic parts of the city to be used during fires. Each costs P7,320 and if these are stolen, the District would incur water losses, she said.

She said they have coordinated with the police and have also requested junkshop owners not to buy stolen items belonging to BACIWA.

Carbon said the public can call their hotline numbers 433-4601 or 433-4602, for any complaint or report.

To water supply-related problems, the telephone numbers are 433-1294, 708-0233 or 09209125438.

She said the District is planning to put up a satellite center or an additional room, either inside or outside BACIWA, to accommodate paying consumers.

Meanwhile, BACIWA will celebrate the Water District Week on Jan. 22 to 26, as declared by the Philippine Association of Water Districts, a press release from the District said.

It also said BACIWA will conduct lectures on watershed protection and water conservation tips to the following public elementary schools : Bonifacio Elementary School, Handumanan Elementary School, Mabini Elementary School, Vista Alegre Elementary School, and A.I. Jayme Elementary School.

Resource speakers are engineer Jenelyn Gemora, Engineering Department manager and Fe Jarder, Commercial Services Department manager, the release said.

A photo exhibit about the District's Adopt a Mountain Project, tree planting activities NFEFI's projects will also be held at the BACIWA lobby, it added.*CGS
