Maraņon not unopposed,
early challenger files CoC
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Governor Joseph Maraņon is not running unopposed in the race for the governorship of Negros Occidental in May, and it seems his opponent is raring to go.

Yesterday was the start of the filing of certificates of candidacy and German Valladares was the first and only one to do so at the provincial COMELEC office in Bacolod City, provincial elections supervisor Jessie Suarez said. Valladares, described as a herbalist from Silay City, had also ran for governor in the past and was considered by some as a nuisance candidate.

The last day for filing of CoCs is March 29 and the campaign period starts on March 30.

Most politicians file their CoCs closer to the deadline to avoid violating COMELEC restrictions on official candidates.

Meanwhile, Maraņon said the United Negros Alliance, to which he belongs, will announce its line up soon.

Maraņon is seeking re-election for a third term with Vice Governor Isidro Zayco as his running mate.

Maraņon, who recently attended a League of Provinces meeting in Manila, said he was informed that the Internal Revenue Allotment share of Negros Occidental for this year has been increased.

It will be P1.1 billion compared to about P965 million last year.*CPG
