Filipino booters
go for grand exit

BANGKOK --- The Philippines hopes to cap its campaign on a respectable note when it takes on Myanmar in its final group game in the Asean Football Championship here.

Two straight 4-0 losses against Malaysia and Thailand have pulled the Filipinos out of the title race and coach Aris Caslib yesterday said that his team will "do everything possible" to make a grand exit in this eight-nation tournament.

A semifinal berth is on the line for Myanmar, which drew its first two games, leaving them third at the table behind joint leaders Malaysia and Thailand. The Thais and Malays play at 7 p.m. at the Suphachalasai Stadium, simultaneous with the RP-Myanmar clash at the Army Stadium.

Melligen eyeing
WBO As-Pac crown

Bacolod City-born boxer Mark Jason Melligen will take a crack at the World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific crown when he collides with a Korean opponent on Feb. 9 in Korea.

The 12-round title bout for the light welterweight WBO As-Pac crown will be the first international fight for the 20-year-old Melligen after turning professional in April last year.

Melligen, who was born in Barangay Pahanocoy, holds an impressive 6-0 record with five knockouts as his first three fights ended in less than a minute into the opening round.

Artians bring home
fourth cheering title

The College of Arts and Sciences regained lost glory when it brought home the cheering title yesterday at the start of the 2007 University of St. La Salle Sportsfest at the jampacked USLS Coliseum in Bacolod City.

The Artians, who have bowed to the College of Education for the past three years, made sure that the championship will not get away from their hands this time around with unique stunts and crisp moves that earned the nod of the big crowd. CAS, which won its fourth cheering title in seven years, automatically gained the front seat in the overall championship race by collecting 60 points for winning the cheering competition of the weeklong hostilities.
