Fire hits Dumaguete
business, apartments
BY RENE GENOVE & JUANCHO GALLARDE

Fire of unknown origin razed three business establishments in downtown Dumaguete, destroying three rows of apartments but spared three other stores at the corner of Silliman Avenue and Mariano Perdices Street, Dumaguete City, at 3:37 a.m. yesterday.

Initial fire investigations showed that Rosante, Body and Soul and Marjorie's Boutique were gutted to the ground and estimated damage to property placed at P2.5 million.

Gobbled up by the fire were the Marciano Kho building which houses the Marjories Boutique and Rosante bar and restaurant, Soledad Flores building which houses Body and Soul, a spa and massage parlor; and several student lodgers/boarders, namely Santiago Patulin, Allan Tan Pastor, Frederick Solis and the Garrovillo Building which is undergoing renovation and Staple Square school supply store which incurred water damage.

Vallahermoso mayor
defies suspension

Vallehermoso Mayor Joniper Villegas refused to vacate his office despite the order from the Office of the Ombudsman-Manila suspending him for six months and one day, without pay, as of yesterday, Jan.15.

DILG provincial director Jofralito Lorico failed to remove bodily Villegas because he barricaded the premises and prevented him and other officials from entering the municipal hall.

However, Governor George Arnaiz told Provincial Attorney Erwin Vergara to implement the order and let Vice-Mayor Buenaventura Ollandas take his oath of office as Mayor and assume immediately the office of mayor in an acting capacity while Villegas, "temporarily legal incapacity subsists".

I'm running for
governor, Macias says

Rep. Emilio Macias II (Neg. Or., 2nd district) confirmed that he is running for governor of Negros Oriental in the May 2007 polls.

Macias was the undefeated governor of the province until his term ended and incumbent Governor George Arnaiz took over.

Macias said he considers the achievement of Arnaiz as the Outstanding Governor of the Province his greatest challenge. Arnaiz has done a lot of good projects in the province which made him gather prestigious awards, he said. He cannot promise awards like Arnaiz but he is committed to continue his projects especially in bringing development to the hinterland barangays.
