DILG suspends mayor in NegOr
BY CARLA GOMEZ & RENE GENOVE

Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz yesterday confirmed that he had been informed by a Department of Interior and Local Government official Saturday that Secretary Ronaldo Puno has suspended Mayor Joniper Villegas of Vallahermoso town.

"I was informed that the suspension order was delivered to my office on Saturday but since the Capitol was closed, I told the DILG to deliver it instead on Monday," Arnaiz said. Provincial legal officer Erwin Vergara said Vallahermoso Vice Mayor Buenaventura Olladas will assume the post of mayor today. Vergara also said he had received reports that Villegas was refusing to step down and that a barricade had been set up at the town hall, but the matter has yet to be verified.

Cebu traffic gridlock worsens
as ASEAN summit ends today

CEBU -- Nobody would think it was a Sunday here yesterday with motorists and public utility vehicles battling for spaces at city downtown to avoid road blocks put up for the tour of ASEAN leaders' spouses while 10 state leaders continue to deliberate on various concerns at their summit meetings which end today.

"We are losing much because of the Summit," a taxi driver told the DAILY STAR while pushing his way to get out of heavy traffic at Osmeņa Boulevard which, he said is rather virtually empty on a Sunday.

The City Traffic Operations Management had asked the drivers to bear with heavy traffic which motorists assessed was worse than that in December when the summit was called off due to typhoon "Seniang."

Arnaiz setting meet on
governorship row

DUMAGUETE CITY -- Negros Oriental Governor George Arnaiz is brokering a meeting between his two friends - Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices and Rep. Emilio Macias II to decide once and for all on who between the two childhood friends will run for governor this year.

The meeting was to be held Sunday night, on the eve of the start of the filing of certificates of candidacy for the local and national elections.

Both Perdices and Macias have indicated interest in running for governor, although Perdices can still seek a third term as Dumaguete City Mayor. Macias, on the other hand, has used up his three terms in Congress.
