Automated voted counting
in Bacolod unlikely

Bacolod Comelec Registrar Mavil Majarucon yesterday assured Bacoleņos of fair and honest election results in the coming May 14 synchronized national and local elections.

Majarucon said she expects a lot of intrigues and issues in the coming election, especially from politicians who cannot admit their defeat. She said she reminded her election assistants that, as long as they do their job well and do not get themselves involved in partisan activities, they should not be disturbed, she said. Majarucon said she reminded her election assistants that as public servants, they are accountable to the people and not to the politicians. She also appealed to the politicians to be supportive of them.

"I hope the politicians will treat us fairly since our role is only to facilitate the election process and come up with a fair and honest result," she said.

Meanwhile, Majarucon also said they have no information from the Commissioners Office if Bacolod will be made a pilot area for the implementation of automated vote counting.

She, however, said she believes it will not be possible since elections are only five months away and the Comelec has not yet programmed the counting machine to be used, and no bidding was ever done for the special ballots. What may only push through is the satellite transmission of the election results, she said.

Majarucon said if the automated vote counting pushes through, the Data Capturing System will be compatible with the automation process. She said they have almost cleansed 50 percent of the DCS and if it is needed during the election, they can finish it on time.

The COMELEC is still collating data since the registration period ended only on Dec. 31, she added. Majarucon, however, said the Computer Voters List is almost finished and Comelec Bacolod can come up with the complete list of voters for the May 14, 2007 elections.*CGS
