'B' sugar prices remain
above P1,000 per Lkg

Prices of "B" or raw sugar remained above P1,000 per 50-Lkg, but higher than last week's, at the bidding held Thursday, price monitor of the Sugar Master Plan Foundation shows.

In January 4, millgate prices ranged from P1,204.25 to P1,149.68 per Lkg.

This week, the lowest was pegged at P1,067.67 while the highest, at P1,208.89.

The Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company sold its stocks at P1,111 (high) and P1,067.67 (low) for a total volume of 18,523.70 Lkgs.; Central Azucarera de La Carlota, P1,111.60 (high) and P1,067.67 (low), 1,714.63 Lkgs; Hawaiian-Philippine Company, P1,118.18 (high) and P1,077.10 (low), 12,482.82 Lkgs.;

RP, Japan explore biofuels'
R&D, marketing prospects

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development worked with Japanese researchers in exploring the research and development and marketing prospect on biofuels in the Philippines.

PCARRD said in a press release that in line with Japan's search for non-petrol fuel sources, Chiba University professor Atsushi Maruyama and Japan Intage Inc. researcher Satoshi Kai visited the agency last month to look into the current status of biofuels in the country.

Agency officials presented proposals for an Integrated R&D Program on Biofuels, focusing on the subprogram on utilization of sweet sorghum and cassava for ethanol production; and for an R&D program on Jatropha curcas for biodiesel production.

IN 2006
Almost 5,000 OFWs
return to Neg.Occ.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration-Negros Occidental has recorded the return of 4,938 overseas workers in the province in 2006.

Records of the local office of the POEA show they have helped 137 clients in processing their papers.

In 2006, the POEA central office recorded 1.09 million Filipinos deployed overseas.

The Department of Labor and Employment said the next three years will be brighter for Filipinos seeking employment abroad with about 815,000 "high-end" jobs available overseas.
