Feb. 11-16
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The 2007 Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet is set for Feb. 11 to 16 with majority of the events to be staged at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Division Schools Supt. Eva Belicena yesterday said the Physical Education and School Sports supervisors met with Dr. Eden Deriada, Region VI PESS supervisor, to inspect the playing venues and billeting quarters of the delegations.

The PESS supervisors should submit their findings within the week so suggested improvements could still be made in the various venues before the Regional Meet, she said. Aside from Panaad, the Paglaum Sports Complex, University of St. La Salle, West Negros College, Negros Occidental High School, Riverside College and Mansilingan Agro-Industrial High School, among others, will also be the site of a number of disciplines.

Negros, spearheaded by its athletics and swimming squads, swept the overall championships in the elementary and high school contests last year in Roxas City, Capiz

The Negrenses hope to keep the crowns of the regional Palaro against contingents from Iloilo, Antique, Capiz, Aklan and Guimaras.

Student-athletes in the elementary category will battle for the titles in the boys and girls' athletics, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, lawn tennis, taekwondo, chess, badminton, gymnastics, boys' basketball, girls' softball, boys' football and sipa.

The secondary competitions will stake titles in the boys and girls' lawn tennis, swimming, athletics, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, chess, badminton, gymnastics, girls' softball, and boys' basketball, football, arnis and sepak takraw.

The winning coaches during last month's Provincial Meet also had a meeting at Paglaum yesterday to discuss Negros' line-up for the weeklong regional Palaro.

Bacolod ousted Area IV to bring home the overall championship of the elementary hostilities, while the Area IV standouts, led by their athletics teams, retained their secondary title. Belicena said that the different working committees will also have a meeting at 9 a.m. today at the Negros Occidental Teacher's Federation Center to discuss the preparations for the school-based meet.

Dr. Victoriano Tirol, regional director of Western Visayas Department of Education, will also meet with Gov. Joseph Maraņon on Thursday to present the plans for the Regional Meet, she said. *CIT
