JOAN TIPON, Amateur Boxing

Boxer Joan Tipon fittingly capped another inspiring year for Negros sports by winning the bantamweight golf in the 15th Asian Games. After Olympian Harry Tanamor was suspended from the National Team bound for Doha, the 24-year-old Tipon was thrust into the limelight and loomed as the brightest gold medal hope.

And he did not disappoint. Ranged against Olympic silver medalist Woorapoj Petchkoom of Thailand, Tipon was pushed to the limit but managed to come away via a majority decision, after the score-line ended at 13-all in the bantamweight semifinals. Television footages showed Tipon in tears as the referee raised his hands in victory. "Seeing the crowd all cheering for me brought me to tears. I just realized my hard work had paid off," Tipon, who hails from Sibucao, Barangay Banago, Bacolod City, said.

DLNHS,
Senior League Softball

Representing the Asia-Pacific region, Education and Training Center School of Bacolod City finally got over the hump in the World Series with its best finish in the tournament by placing first runner-up in the Junior League Softball event in Kirkland, Washington in August.

Spearheaded by pitcher Veronica Belleza, sisters Annalie and Nerissa Benjamin, and catcher Cherry Bartolome, ETCS had victories against US-West, 4-0; US-Central, 1-0, and Latin America, 4-3, in the eliminations with its only loss coming at the hands of defending champion US-South, 0-2.

JUVIC PAGUNSAN, Pro Golf

Juvic Pagunsan's decision to turn professional in 2006 proved to be the right one.

Having won almost every amateur title in the country, the former caddy from the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin, Murcia took the Asian Professional Golf Tour by storm, winning the $24 million-circuit's Rookie of the Year award. A two-time Southeast Asian Games champion, Pagunsan finished seventh in the Order of Merit, after earning a total of $291,847 (roughly P14.3 million) in prize money, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the UBS HongKong Open.
