JAMES YAP, Pro Basketball

His on-court and off-court exploits made James Yap one of the most prominent sports personalities this year. The soft-spoken cager from Escalante City let his game do much of the talking, achieving a personal milestone when he won the PBA Most Valuable Player award, the first Negrense to achieve the feat. Yap, 24, then led Purefoods to the All-Filipino title.

But while the 6-2 Yap, who had studied in Mt. Carmel School in Escalante City and Bacolod Tay Tung National High School, made sports headlines with his on-court brilliance, the announcement of showbiz personality Kris Aquino that they had been married in 2005 also demanded prime space on the front pages. Aquino and Yap are expecting their first baby this year.
