More drug cases in Oriental Negros are expected to be tried and filed in court this year, Regional Trial Court Branch. 30 presiding Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr. said recently.

Records show that Tan has disposed of 170 criminal cases out of the total 275 cases in 2006 and of these, 162 were related to illegal drugs.

Tan said he believes that the disposal ratio is high enough but the ideal based on Supreme Court guidelines is 1:1.

Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz has announced plans to implement another multi-million peso landmark project, the rubberizing of the track oval of the Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City that will cost about P24 million.

Once it is completed, he said, Oriental Negros, with its Olympic-sized swimming pool, and the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center, and other sports facilities, will be capable of hosting the Palarong Pambansa and other big sports events.

Provincial agriculturist Gregorio Paltinca said Oriental Negros has recovered from the first cropping that yielded a very low harvest with the increased yield in the second cropping season.

Peanuts produced in Oriental Negros is marketed to a company in Luzon that is demanding a bigger volume from the province. Paltinca said that his visit to one of the Barangay Agricultural Development Centers, showed a positive development with the increase in peanut harvest.

The agriculture office will purchase the harvested peanuts from the farmers at reasonable cost depending on the buying price in the market, he said.
