Football glory, Pacquiao
victories top 2006 stories

Football's popularity hit a record high in Negros Occidental last year. And thanks to Negrenses, Philippine football is also reaching new heights.

Proof of this was the combined attendance of 60,000 in the Philippines' four matches in the Asean Football Championship-Qualifiers at the Panaad Park and Stadium in November as well as the thousands who stayed up late and converged at bars and other viewing areas to watch the World Cup, held only once every four years, and won this year by Italy.

RP BOOTERS CLAIM
ASEAN FINALS SLOT

The Philippines capped its campaign in the 15th edition of the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar with 19 medals, including four golds, six silvers and nine bronzes, to finish 18th overall.

Spearheaded by the four gold medalists including Bacolod City-born boxer Joan Tipon, the Filipinos eclipsed the three golds they grabbed in the 2002 Busan Asian Games. The RP delegation finished fourth among the Southeast Asian countries.

Also posting top honors aside from the 24-year-old Tipon from Sitio Sibucao in Barangay Banago were fellow boxer Violito Payla, billiard ace Antonio "Gaga" Gabica and wushu world champion Rene Catalan, who hails from Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

NEGRENSES CHEER FOR PACMAN

For thousands of Negrenses, time stood still for a few hours on three special Sundays of 2006 as they prayed and cheered for boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, an adopted son of Bacolod City. The 28-year-old Pacquiao was unbeaten in three fights in 2006, punctuating the year with a phenomenal third round knockout victory over Mexican legend Erik "El Terrible" Morales in Nov. 19 in the final fight of their trilogy. The victory was a fitting follow up to a swashbuckling triumph in Jan. 22 when Pacquiao sent Morales to the canvass for the first time in his fabled career. The 11th round stoppage set up the exciting finale in November, which did not go the distance because of Pacquiao's speed and punching power which left Morales a badly-beaten man.
