ASEAN FINALS SLOT

The Philippines capped its campaign in the 15th edition of the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar with 19 medals, including four golds, six silvers and nine bronzes, to finish 18th overall.

Spearheaded by the four gold medalists including Bacolod City-born boxer Joan Tipon, the Filipinos eclipsed the three golds they grabbed in the 2002 Busan Asian Games. The RP delegation finished fourth among the Southeast Asian countries.

Also posting top honors aside from the 24-year-old Tipon from Sitio Sibucao in Barangay Banago were fellow boxer Violito Payla, billiard ace Antonio "Gaga" Gabica and wushu world champion Rene Catalan, who hails from Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

Godfrey Castro, who was born in Cadiz City, was the other Negrense athlete delivering a medal for the Philippines by reaching the light flyweight semifinals of the boxing competitions as other Negrenses fell short.

SEA Games record holder Arniel Ferrera, who hails from Cauayan, posted a season's best 57.50-meter effort, but only placed seventh in men's hammer throw, while Victorias City-born Joebert Delicano had a 7.56-m leap to come in eighth in the men's long jump.

Bacoleņo Anya Tanpinco was disqualified in the second round of the women's individual golf after failing to sign her scorecard, while Bacolod bet Reynaldo Grandea was shown the door in the round of 16 of the men's carom 3 cushion hostilities.

Rhovyl Verayo, who was born in Pulupandan, and partner Parley Tupaz of Roxas lost in the men's beach volleyball.
