An official of the Philippine Volleyball Federation yesterday
said that Bacolod City is being eyed to host the Asian Youth Boys'
Volleyball Championship in May.
Roger Banzuela, chairman of the PVF Coaching Commission, told
the DAILY STAR that Bacolod may be given the task of hosting the
Asian tournament because it would be too expensive to staged it
in Manila. The only problem being foreseen if Bacolod holds the
event is that it does not have an international airport that could
lessen the hassles of airport transfers, the former PVF president
said.
Banzuela said that during a recent workshop in Manila the
PVF officials also discussed other possibilities for the hosting
in case Bacolod will not be available.
The PVF has also decided to withdraw the hosting task
if a marketing group to raise funds for the international hostilities
is not formed at least a month before the event, he added. Banzuela
said that the Asian tournament will be used by the PVF as a fund-raising
activity to pay its $100,000 or about P5 million debt to the international
volleyball federation, or FIVB.
The PVF incurred a $75,000 debt to the FIVB as part of the
bond for holding a leg of the Women's Grand Prix in 2005 and another
$25,000 for the 2004 WGP.
Banzuela said that the debts were incurred because the marketing
groups that were supposed to raise funds for the bond backed out
only a few weeks before the tournament. "We want to make sure that
this does not happen again if we decide to host the Asian Youth
event," he added. *CIT
