Foundation helps in reforestation

The Goretti Foundation distributed 18 cows and 40 goats to farmers belonging to the Tribu Bukidnon and the Cabatuanan Farmers Association who helped reforest the 75-hectare Cabatuanan Reforestation and Wildlife Conservation Project in Basay, Oriental, Negros.

Msgr. Merlin Logronio of the Ma. Goretti Foundation is spearheading the project. He said the implementation process was not an easy task since they have to convince the people in the area to support it.

The undertaking is financed by the European Commission and managed by the United Nations Development Project.

Logronio said the livestock was given as incentive to the farmers who religiously planted the 75-hectares reforestation area in Cabatuanan, but with the condition that they have to increase the number of heads. The reforestation area is planted with fruit trees and other endemic species. The project was successfully implemented with the support from Cabatuanan Barangay Captain Carmelito Santillan, Jr.

Santillan said that, because of the unified effort they built a fire tower in the reforestation area to prevent incidents of forest fire will occur since the place is a cogonal area.*MA
