Rodolfo "Rudy" Parreņo was elected president for 2007-2009 of
the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Negros Occidental Chapter
Saturday at the Hall of Justice in Bacolod City.
Parreņo, a convenor of the Negros Movement for Moral Regeneration
and past president of the Rotary Club of Bacolod, among other civic
organizations, told the DAILY STAR yesterday that he and other officers
were actually elected unopposed. Chosen vice president was Gina
Mirano-Jesena, Ma. Corazon Katalbas - secretary, Jovim Entila -
treasurer, Pacifico Maghari - auditor, and Joel Dojillo - public
relations officer.
Comprising the Board of Directors were Jan Anthony Saril,
Arnel Lapore, Andrew Pandan, Ernesto Pilla and Maphilindo Polvora.
Parreņo said their immediate plan is to construct an elevator
at the Hall of Justice to give comfort and ease to old legal practitioners,
judges and litigants so they would no longer labor on the stairs
from the first level to the third floor, where the offices of the
City and Provincial Prosecutors are situated.
Parreņo, who finished his primary and secondary education
at the La Salle University in Bacolod, is a graduate of the Ateneo
de Manila University Law School, hurdled the Bar examinations in
1971, and took his oath as lawyer the following year. He took over
the reins from William Mirano, during whose term the IBP instituted
various projects, particularly having courtrooms at the Hall of
Justice air-conditioned.
A total of 527 lawyers were qualified to vote and be voted
upon during the election, excluding those holding an elective office,
judicial, quasi-judicial or prosecutory office in government, or
in any subdivision or instrumentality.
IBP officers hold honorary positions, and are not allowed to receive
any compensation, allowance or emolument.*GCT
