Inventor donates eco-kalan to GK

A couple active in community service and advanced environmental causes donated yesterday eco-Kalans to households of Gawad Kalinga 2 Community in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete City.

Inventor of the eco-Kalan, Rebecca Arrieta-Vermeer and her husband Kess said her invention is a portable stove that produces very little smoke, achieves 95 percent combustion in minutes, uses 70 percent less wood fuel, and capable of using waste for fuel such as coconut stems, husks and its other parts. The Vermeers are members of the Chilcotin Log Church in British Columbia.

From September to October last year, they donated eco-Kalans to GK households in two other communities in the city.

They said they hope to "eco-kalanize" the three Habitat for Humanity Communities comprising about 300 households so they can save on gas, firewood and protect the environment.*MA
