The Negros Occidental secondary boys' baseball team's bid to redeem
itself from a disappointing campaign last year started with a 6-1
drubbing of Guimaras yesterday in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic
Association Meet at the Bacolod City National High School grounds.
Negros finished last a year ago after losing all their games
for fielding an ineligible player. In the other match, Capiz rolled
past Aklan, 11-9. Meanwhile, Iloilo defeated Aklan, 7-6, and Guimaras
won over Capiz, 12-2, in the elementary boys' matches.
In the elementary men's basketball, Iloilo drove past Negros
Occidental, 70-62, at the Negros Occidental Multi- Purpose Gym.
Twin towers Charles Angeles and Bryan Villaruz dominated the
game for Iloilo with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
The 12- year old Angeles stands 5'11 and is originally from
Bacolod City, but was recruited by the Iloilo Commercial Central
High School. Negros Occidental, composed of St. John's Institute
players, is led by spitfire Ray Garrido with coach Arvin Gustilo
at the helm.
In secondary girls' volleyball at the University of St.
La Salle Covered Court, Antique defeated Capiz, 25-16, 15-25, 13-25,
Guimaras won over Aklan, 25-15, 11-25, 25-20, and Iloilo beat Antique,
25-13, 25-15.
In the secondary boys division, Iloilo walloped Antique, 25-5,
25-15, and Capiz, 27-25, 25-19. Capiz trounced Antique, 25-22, 29-27,
Guimaras turned back Aklan, 24-14, 25-20, and Iloilo defeated Capiz,
25-13, 25-23 in the elementary boys' contest. In the elementary
girls division, Iloilo downed Antique, 25-15, 25-14, before clipping
Capiz, 25-19, 25-21. *JCF
