BY CEDELF P. TUPAS

Negros Occidental begins its quest for back-to-back elementary and secondary crowns as action in all but two of the 16 sports disciplines calendared in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet kick off today in different venues in Bacolod City.

The medal-rich swimming and athletic competitions, which stake 30 championship points in each category, get going at the Panaad Park and Stadium, where softball, boxing, taekwondo and demonstration sport, arnis, will also be held.

Taekwondo and arnis will start on Wednesday.

DepEd to widen
cheating probe

The Department of Education in Western Visayas is widening its investigation on the alleged age-cheating incident that happened in the 2006 Negros Occidental Palarong Panlalawigan in Bacolod City. Victoriano Tirol, regional director of the Department of Education in Western Visayas, yesterday told the DAILY STAR that his office will conduct a separate inquiry on the case to see if there are other DepEd employees liable in the fielding of a player two years over the limit in the elementary boys' volleyball tournament of the provincial meet.

Tirol said the DepEd is set to file an administrative case on Fifth District schools supervisor Corazon Mohametano, Pahilanga Elementary School principal Nenita Caballero and PES teacher Julio Ferreros, who served as head coach of the team. "They will be given an opportunity to defend themselves and explain," Tirol said.

Maraņon to athletes: Stand firm

Gov. Joseph Maraņon yesterday exhorted athletes participating in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet to "stand firm" and overcome challenges in every sports competition.

At the opening of the WVRAA Meet at the Panaad Park and Stadium, Maraņon recalled the incident that involved Iloilo Gov. Neil Tupas, who, he said, was challenged for his post "illegally".

"Still, he was proven to have won fair and square," Maraņon said, referring to the futile attempt of the Department of Interior and Local Government to dismiss Tupas, who was found guilty of corruption by the Office of the Ombudsman.
