Province gears
for Jathropa planting

AT TAMLANG VALLEY
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Oriental Negros government is readying 50,000 Jathropa seedlings for planting next month at the Tamlang Valley, in Sta. Catalina.

This is in anticipation of the proposed ethanol plant in the place after the Bio-Fuel's law was recently signed by President Gloria Arroyo.

Board Member Henry Pryde Teves said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is recommending the planting of jathropa, instead of sugarcane, because of its strong roots which can hold water and help in the prevention of soil erosion.

cancer awareness
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Valencia Local Council for Women has endorsed a fund-raising campaign for breast cancer awareness called the "pin-a-heart" program.

Breast cancer survivor and organizer of Valencia Local Council for Women Celeste Cata-al is spearheading the campaign. Cata-al said the fund-raising drive is aimed at accumulating funds to help breast cancer victims, and has been conducted for the last three years, after its launching on Feb. 14, 2005.

She said that, aside from this program, their group is also giving out information sheets on the early detection of breast cancer.
