Pijuan bats for
renewable energy use
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Civic leader Aurora Pijuan yesterday called on Negrenses to raise the level of awareness on the hazards of global warming and promote renewable energy.

Pijuan, the Miss International titlist in 1970, made the call during the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Bacolod-South.

Echoing the statement of former United States vice-president Al Gore, who is actively involved in environmental issues, Pijuan said that global warming has become a "moral issue".

Let us be part of the solution against global warming by talking about it, she said.

Pijuan said most natural disasters, including those that happened in the Philippines, have been attributed to global warming, a phenomenon where greenhouse gases trap the heat of the sun, causing weather imbalance and temperatures on earth to rise. Pijuan, who is also a Gawad Kalinga volunteer, said a person could start by changing little habits, like driving less and using energy-saving lamps.

Citing a scientific study, Pijuan said the chances of global warming can be decreased by 6 percent if every household in the world used energy-saving lamps.

The former beauty queen also lauded Negros Occidental for promoting the use of bio-ethanol. *CPT
