Congressional
cagefest opens

The 6th Congressional Basketball Tournament formally opened Saturday, in San Jose, Oriental Negros.

Gov. George Arnaiz, with San Jose Mayor Nelson Ruiz led the ceremonial tossing of the ball to signal the start of the tournament. The competition is a regular sports activity sponsored by the Oriental Negros government. There are three congressional districts in the province.

It is also aimed at encouraging young people to engage in sports.

Arnaiz said the province started the tournament six years ago and that he has noted a positive impact on the young and the community.

The governor said he is hoping that, through sports, young people will be discouraged from using illegal drugs.

The champion will compete in the Governor's Cup that will be held at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.

Arnaiz said he has observed that in the past six years of the Governor's Cup he has always seen strong support and enthusiasm for the community.

The governor thanked the mayors who participated and cooperated in the activities.*MA
