Albert R.T. Lim Jr., president of the Negros Occidental
Hog Raisers Association, yesterday welcomed the move of the Bacolod
City Government to finally utilize its slaughterhouse in Brgy.
Handumanan.
"That is good for the consuming public (because)
we're being left behind," he said.
Lim, who is also president of the National Federation
of Hog Farmers Inc., told the DAILY STAR that, with a new slaughterhouse,
Bacolod will be able to ensure clean meat for the public since
the facility will be supervised by the National Meat Inspection
Service. He said the city's existing abattoir in Brgy. 35, which
he described as unsanitary, wouldn't even pass as an "A" facility.

Silay
among RP's most
competitive cities
The Asian Institute of Management identified Silay
in Negros Occidental as among the 38 mid-sized cities on the rise
in the Philippines, in terms of competitiveness in the cost of
doing business, among others.
A study made by AIM Policy Center on Pinoy Cities
on the Rise showed that Silay ranked sixth among 38 mid-sized
cities in the Philippines in the cost of doing business, which
it attributed to affordable cost of power and water, low labor
cost and affordable rental rate of commercial space.

Arroyo wants new
bidding for TransCo
MANILA - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on yesterday
said she wanted a re-bidding of the country's power grid following
four failed attempts to privatize the system.
"I'm leaning towards a re-bidding," Arroyo said
when asked about the failure of the latest attempt to privatise
the National Transmission Corp. An auction for the 25-year license
to run the country's multi-million dollar power grid was declared
a failure on February 5 after only one of three potential bidders
made a formal offer.
Finance Secretary Margarito Teves said at the time
the government may resort to a negotiated deal to privatize the
power grid although he added that another round of bidding still
remained an option.
