Tribute to an artist

Museo Negrense de La Salle in Bacolod City recently paid tribute to renowned Philippine artist and cartoonist, the late Larry Alcala, through an exhibit that will run up to Feb. 22.

Larry was married to the former Guadalupe Valdez, and they have three children, Lauro Jr., Dr. Peewee, and Toti. His wife and all their children have talents in sketching and drawing.

In 1996, Larry and his family settled in Bacolod. Earlier, Larry has already set his eyes on Bacolod, saying it was a lovely and pleasant place and very ideal for retirement. He had been here for visits, business and pleasure trips. While here, Larry was able to play his guitar and harmonica and be with his favorite dog, read all the mystery novels and dabble in cooking. But he continued to paint, do commission strips for the "Slice of Life," and dine out with his family.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree holder in Painting at the University of the Philippines, Larry went on a travel study grant in Australia. He was a U.P. College of Fine Arts professor, from 1951 to 1981.

His last exhibit was in 1999 at the Westin Philippine Plaza, entitled Larry Alcala and Friends Cartoons and Caricature. Countless awards were given to him for his works at the Philippine National Cartoonists.

Larry shall be forever etched in the hearts of Bacoleņos.*

Remember: "To make the most of your time on earth, always keep heaven in mind."*
