Valencia farmers
avail of 'hakot' program
BY AMRAICAR ARANAS

Farmers from Valencia will now display their farm products near the southbound terminal in Barangay Bacagay in Dumaguete City.

Mayor Rodulfo Gonzales said they have decided to find a suitable "paunay" area for the farmers after the city government of Dumaguete decided to transfer the "paunay" market to Barangay Bajumpandan.

Under the "hakot" program, farm products will be brought to the paunay market in Bagacay every Saturday. At present farmers have observed a positive effect after traders come and buy their products in bulk. The mayor said they asked the Perigua family to use the vacant space for the farmers. Every farmer will be paying P20 to the lot owner every end of the market day.

The city government also has provided them with the business permit to operate in the area. Gonzales set aside the issue that it will be competing with the same "paunay" market in Bajumpandan.

A staff from the Municipal Agriculture office is tasked to monitor the paunay market insuring that no traders be allowed to sell together with farmers.

The mayor said they discouraged traders from joining the paunay market since this will be disadvantageous to the farmers. Gonzales added that the local government is hoping to establish a direct market for the farmers so they will no longer have to display in "paunay" market.

The municipality of Valencia is one of the suppliers of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and other vegetables in Dumaguete City.*MA
