| The Asosasyon sg mga Trabahador sa Slaughterhouse claimed yesterday that the memorandum of agreement between the city and AVM Bernardo for the operation of the slaughterhouse in Bacolod City was signed “without proper consultation”.
They also reiterated their demand for the retention and rehabilitation of the old slaughterhouse in Brgy. 35, Bacolod City .
Tina Sator, coordinator of the Kilusan para sa Pambansang Demokrasya-Negros, claimed the city failed to follow the democratic process of consultation and conduct transparent studies especially with the affected sector when it signed the MOA with the contractor, and failed to consider the livelihood of more than 1,000 families dependent on the existing slaughterhouse.
The MOA was signed between the city and AVM Bernardo in February 2007.
Councilor Alex Paglumotan, chairman of the Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse, said the city will look for alternative solutions to address the concerns of the residents of Barangays 34 and 35.
He said he and Councilor Celia Flor will conduct a series of committee conferences with the parties.
The Bacolod Lechon Vendors, in their position paper, said they are against the privatization and transfer of the slaughterhouse to Brgy. Handumanan because their business will be affected.
They said they are also opposing the implementation of the MOA since their workers will be dislocated and they will be charged higher fees.*CGS
