| Three tricycle drivers died, while eight were injured in vehicular accidents occurring within eight hours Thursday in the cities of Silay and Kabankalan, Negros Occidental, police said.
Police investigators identified the fatalities as Fernando Baltazar and his son, Ferjie, and John Rey de Guzman of Kabankalan City .
Baltazar and his son were repairing a tricycle along the highway in Brgy. Guinhalaran, Silay City , when they were hit by a wayward Suzuki multi-cab vehicle driven by Allen Alimbuangon, at about 3 p.m. Thursday.
SPO3 Bernie Javellana, Silay police chief traffic investigator, said the younger Baltazar was killed on the spot, while Fernando, who sustained multiple injuries, died an hour later at the Teresita Lopez Jalandoni Provincial Hospital .
Police investigations show that a front tire of the vehicle driven by Alimbuangon exploded for unknown reason, hitting Baltazar and his son.
Alimbuangon is now detained at the Silay police jail.
In Kabankalan, De Guzman was driving a tricycle with eight passengers, all minors, when they were sideswiped by a Ceres Liner passenger bus bound for Dumaguete City , along the highway of Hacienda San Lucas in Brgy. Hilamonan, Kabankalan City , at about 8 a.m. Thursday.
PO2 Jesus Tuazon, Kabankalan police traffic investigator, said de Guzman was declared dead on arrival at the Southern Negros Doctor's Hospital.
The eight injured passengers, were students of the Fellowship Baptist College , identified as Danilo Bantilan, Bimbim Lambroso, Maria Lynette Macalindon, Shiela Mae Alarcon, Shirley Bartejos, Alvin Pabiles, James Casipsip, and Mervin Espinosa. They are now being treated at the SNDH, the Kabankalan District Hospital and the Gumersindo Yap Memorial Hospital in Kabankalan City .
Police investigations showed that the tricycle driven by de Guzman was trying to overtake another tricycle, when it was sideswiped by the passenger bus driven by Nilo Palomo.*GPB
