Ensure solid waste management
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resolution enjoining the new officials of the 61 barangays of Bacolod City to plan and implement non-traditional strategies and approaches in their Solid Waste Management programs was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

The resolution proposed by Councilors Jocelle Batapa-Sigue and Greg Gasataya, said these strategies include implementing a sustainable segregation at source, composting for organic fertilizer, collection and delivery of biodegradable waste for waste to energy programs, and setting of a material recovery facility for purposes of recycling and re-using, as well as, other “zero waste” programs within their barangays.

It also said the barangay officials should encourage households to actively join the program by initiating information and education campaigns on pertinent penal provisions of Republic Act No. 9003 or the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000” and other pertinent laws.

It said R.A. 9003 mandates waste diversion from disposal sites. It said waste diversion is the sum of all activities pertaining to re-use, recycling, and other process.

The resolution also said improper handling of waste does not only burden the city SWM program but also contributes in the long run to climate change caused by the unutilized emission of methane gases, as well as, the proliferation of diseases in the community.*CGS
