roster of awardees

An impressive cast of athletes consisting of an Asian Games boxing champion, a Southeast Asian Games triple gold medalist, a former Philippine Basketball Association Most Valuable Player and two homegrown golfers making waves abroad made the final list of awardees for the SCOOP Bacolod Awards for Outstanding Athletes.

Bacoleño Joan Tipon who used his ring savvy and precision punching to seize the bantamweight gold medal in the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, and Cauayan strongman Arniel Ferrera, who ruled the SEA Games hammer throw event for the third straight time in Thailand recently, join early choices Gerry Peñalosa and Donnie Nietes in the roster of awardees, SCOOP president George Liza announced yesterday.

Sermona arriving today

Himamaylan athlete Julius Sermona, who brought home two Southeast Asian Games gold medals from Thailand recently, will arrive in Negros Occidental today, sportsman Oscar “Dodong” Bascon said yesterday.

Bascon, husband of Himamaylan mayor Carminia Bascon, will welcome Sermona of Barangay Libacao, who placed second in the 5,000m and 10,000m event in biennial meet in Nakhon Ratchasima , Thailand .

A press conference with Sermona will be held at Dodong's Fastbreak will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oscar Bascon said.

P10.3M in incentives
for SEAG medallists

The 228 Filipino medalists in the 24 th Southeast Asian Games received welcome news yesterday, following the announcement of Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez that their incentives will be turned over on Saturday.

Ramirez said the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation has approved the release of P10.3 million as incentives for the medallists.

He said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will hand the incentives to the athletes at Malacañang on Saturday.
