| A resolution requesting Mayor Evelio Leonardia for the retention and rehabilitation of the existing slaughterhouse was passed by the Barangay Council of Brgy. 35, Bacolod City recently.
It said the barangay council condemns the transfer of the old slaughterhouse to Brgy. Handumanan and that 60 to 70 percent of its constituents are dependent on the existing slaughterhouse for their source of income.
The resolution also said that the constituents of Brgy. 35 support the move of the Asosasyon sg mga Trabahador sang Slaughterhouse.
The AMTS had submitted its position paper to the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod opposing the transfer and privatization of the existing slaughterhouse to Handumanan. It also demanded the scrapping of the memorandum of agreement entered into between the city and AVM Bernardo.
Councilor Alex Paglumotan, chairman of the Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse, said he has received the resolution of Brgy. 35 and that he will discuss the matter with the Mayor.
He and Councilor Celia Flor will also conduct a series of committee conferences with the parties involved, he said.
Paglumotan said the contractor, AVM Bernardo Engineering is planning to conduct a test run of the slaughterhouse in Handumanan this month and that their target date to operate is January next year. He said he will check on the slaughterhouse operation once AVM Bernardo starts its test run.
AVM Bernardo is investing P54 million for the rehabilitation of the new slaughterhouse in Handumanan which was constructed in 2001 by former Bacolod Rep. John Orola.
The project which costs P19.5 million was turned over to the city in 2003.*CGS
