Smugglers of ‘magic sugar'
in Neg. Occ. warned of raps

The National Bureau of Investigation yesterday warned those who continue to smuggle and sell cancer-causing sweeteners in Negros Occidental that charges will be filed against them if caught.

NBI Bacolod chief Mamerto Cortez said the NBI has received reports that about five sacks of magic sugar enter Negros Occidental every week from Mindanao, passing through Dumaguete City .

It is allegedly being distributed in the province by a Muslim trader.

Those caught selling magic sugar can be charged for violating Republic Act 3720 (Food, Drugs, Devices and Cosmetics Act) and BFAD Advisory 00-05 issued on Aug. 7, 2000.

BFAD Advisory 00-05 said it has been brought to the attention of the agency that Neotogen or Magic Sugar, is continuously being sold in the local markets.

BFAD reiterated that the use of Neotogen or Magic Sugar as food sweetener is prohibited, due to evidence of its carcinogenicity in animals.

Neotogen or Magic Sugar is not registered with the BFAD. As such, the importation, distribution or sale of the product is illegal and is subject to the sanctions and penalties stipulated in Republic Act 3720, the "Foods, Drugs, Devices and Cosmetics Act, it said.

Last week, the NBI raided Kioks store in Bacolod City for allegedly selling smuggled magic sugar and seized 77 packs.*CPG
