Education, environment
provincial SK priorities
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The education of the out-of-school youth and protection of the environment are the priority programs of the new officers of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Negros Occidental, its president Jebmari Becaro, 17, of Cadiz City and vice president, Greg Carlo Sumogat, 17, of Sipalay City , said yesterday.

At an election held at the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City , Becaro won 20-8 over Hinigaran SK Federation president Don Angelo Emil Colmenares.

Other federation officers who ran unopposed are Fay Maria Charisma Dollosa ( San Carlos ) -- secretary, Archibald Tuvilla Jr. (Talisay) -- treasurer, Peter Hilary Encarnacion (Kabankalan) – auditor, Akeem Feria (La Castellana) – public information officer and Alphine Nico Alonso (Moises Padilla) sergeant at arms.

Becaro is a first year Management student at the University of the Philippines in Cebu City .

She is finishing her second semester at UP Cebu and will return to Negros Occidental every Wednesday to attend the Sangguniang Panlalawigan sessions, but will transfer to Bacolod City next school year, Becaro said.

Sumogat, on the other hand, is a first year Psychology student at Riverside College in Bacolod City .

Absent during the election were the SK Federation presidents of Escalante City and Don Salvador Benedicto.

Gov. Joseph Marañon challenged the provincial SK officers to strengthen the youth of Negros Occidental through leadership by example.

The SK officials should be models for their peers, must regularly attend Sanggunian sessions and start programs for the youth, he said.*CPG
