A two-hour extravaganza

Tonight at 7, Sunshine Cable TV 14 will present a live two-hour extravaganza, a variety show. In the opening the Sunshine Boys will sing their theme song, “You are My Sunshine”, if we have enough number, which you always see every morning when the Channel 14 signs on.

The program is participated in by all tenants in the MBL Bldg. It will be held in the open air in front of MBL.

Many have praised Toti Ramos and Nordy Diploma for singing the song with feeling. That's showmanship.

I asked our Managing Director Amado Villacarlos the rationale for this big bash. He said, that is Sunshine's gesture of thanking the television audience for their patronage. And the advertisers for their support.

“Our motto at Sunshine is to give only the best,” he said. That has been the foundation upon which Sunshine Channel is based. If it cannot give the best, there's no reason for its existence.

Our officials will be with us. Mayor Bing Leonardia is joining us. I understand Congressman Monico Puentevella will be with us too. Our other officials also, especially our Councilors, and Vice-Mayor Thaddy Sayson.

Christmas is a time of cheer. It is our hope everybody shares cheers with others. Tomorrow ABS-CBN will have dinner for a cause for Bantay Bata 163 Negros. Give for a cause.

We support the military and the government officials for honoring the Holiday truce. As Gov. Joseph Marañon said, put Christ at the top.

And this is good because the NPA rebels can celebrate with their families without the fear of being arrested, except those who have complaints against them with the court.

And that when the military says, they will not arrest NPA rebels celebrating Christmas with their families, they make good that promise. The military must maintain a level of credibility.

This is one way to win the rebels to the government side.

I may be wrong but I don't believe there are still rebels. Those we call rebels are also known and are friends of the military. Government can solve rebellion if it really wants to.

And we hope we all re-echo the call of Bishop Vicente Navarra to all our youth to be honest. His call was for the young “to value honesty, truth, good morals and decency in their lives and to nurture their faith.”

He said this when the country marked the Youth Day last Sunday.

Let the youth join our Christian businessmen who have been putting up billboards exhorting people to “Be Honest, even if others will not, cannot and are not.”

In a land known for having so many corrupt officials, inculcating honesty is not easy. But the consistency of the drive can later on bring results.

That news is welcome that says sugar production nears peak and that 15 percent has been placed on reserve, according to the Sugar Regulatory Administration.

I have always said this but, it seems, nobody is picking it up and make a big issue about it. Our sugar production has always been said to be on the peak.

What is bothering me is that 10 years ago and today, our sugar consumption has almost always been the same.

This is unrealistic. The last 10 years our population has increased to something like 15 million. But our sugar consumption has been steady. There were times when the consumption even went down.

And the only plausible explanation is that there was smuggling. And the greatest mystery is that not so many have been caught. We can even say, no big smuggler is caught.

Who is raking in the profit?

Our congratulations to our friend Ramon “Monet” Kilayko on the 20th anniversary of Prudential Guarantee.

Prudential Guarantee under Monet Kilayko has grown tremendously and has become very popular because Monet is really consumer-oriented and to him the customer is the most important. There are others, too. But Monet is different.

I understand Prudential Guarantee has never been complained against with the Insurance Commission because Monet settles matters very fairly and fast.

Salute Monet! You make people trust in insurance.

The common belief before was insurance is there only to get your payment. But when their payment is needed, they are very slow and even find means to justify the non-payment.

This made people shun away from insurance. Monet has corrected that.

How do you fight dengue fever and malaria? Make it a must for people to drain standing water that is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.*
