SEAG debacle renews call
for budget increase
BY CEDELF TUPAS

The disappointing sixth place finish of Team Philippines in the 24 th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand has renewed the call for an increased budget for the Philippine Sports Commission

Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, the chef de mission of the RP Team in Thailand, yesterday said the debacle serves as “a wake-up call that needs to jolt us all because sports received the lowest national budget since the PSC was created in 1990 as our reward for our victorious athletes after winning the SEA Games overall championship in 2005”.

“The medals won't come if we don't have the budget for training, equipment, infrastructure, foreign exposure and a genuine grassroots program,” Puentevella, also the first vice-president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, said.

NPBC, Lady Dragon take titles

Negros Professional Bowlers Club/LJP/Tough Trucks captured the overall championship in the men's division, while Lady Dragon brought home the title in the women's bracket in the 8 th Panasonic Invitational Open Trio Bowling Tournament at the New Top's Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City .

NPBC squad climbed from the bottom to the top for a clean 5-0 triumph in the cross-over championship games.

Playing for the champion team were Jaime Chua, Willy Mahilum, Hernand Garciniego, Carlo Boyero, Ronnie Arroyo and Rey Gargar.

Yap sparks
Purefoods to victory

James Yap was an instant hit even before tip-off on his homecoming game.

And although it took a while for him to heat up, his second-half explosion, not only sent Purefoods to a PBA-leading 11 th victory, but also gave his fellow Negrenses something to smile about Saturday night.

A sellout crowd at the West Negros College Gym roared in delight as Yap displayed the vast array of weapons in his offensive arsenal on his way to a game-high 25 points in Purefoods' 114-92 shellacking of the Air 21 Express.
